Save-On-Foods named BC’s top environmentally-friendly grocer by Ipsos Reid
Vancouver, B.C. —Save-On-Foods, part of BC-based Overwaitea Food Group (OFG), has been recognized by consumers as being one of the top environmentally-friendly retailers in BC.
In a study released today by Ipsos Reid, consumers were asked to pick one retailer operating in BC that best exemplifies an environmentally-friendly business and Save-On-Foods was named the top grocer. "We’re in the food business, so caring about sustainability is just the right thing to do. And, of course, we live here too, so it’s been an easy decision to make it a priority for decades." said Carmen Churcott, vice-president, OFG. “It’s terrific that customers recognize our team’s efforts.”
OFG has a long history of commitment to the environment beginning with its first Environmental Stewardship Award nearly 20 years ago. Today, it continues to focus on providing customers with quality eco-friendly products and environmentally sustainable choices, placing an emphasis on local, Western Canadian products.
Churcott adds, “Recycling, sustainable seafood, reusable bags, energy-efficient stores and our efforts to be the Number One Supporter of local products and producers are just some of the ways we show our commitment every day.”
Since the early 90’s, OFG has been recycling over 90 percent of recyclable materials coming through its stores. As the first Western Canadian grocer to commit to sustainable seafood three years ago, OFG offers more choices today than ever before. OFG has embraced technologies that reduce energy consumption including high-efficiency lighting, energy-reduced refrigeration and heat recovery and reclaim systems. Through energy efficiencies in BC stores alone, OFG annually saves enough electricity to light 6,000 homes and its efforts were recognized for the fifth time by BC Hydro with their highest honour, the 2010 Power Smart Leader Award.
